Q&A: Is hair coloring safe in pregnancy?

I want to get my hair colored, but I have heard that it might hurt the baby. Is hair coloring safe in pregnancy?

I get asked this all the time, and actually find it a tough question to answer. Since there aren't any medical studies looking at the risks of hair dye in pregnancy, the answer you get to this question usually has more to do with your advisor's general philosophy than hard scientific facts. Some practitioners feel you should "take no chances" and if there aren't studies proving safety it should not be done. Others understand that hair coloring can be important to a woman's self image and say it is probably fine after the first trimester. And some say highlights are OK, but dye that sits on the scalp isn't a good idea.

So I think you are going to have to look into your heart, your beliefs, and your personal values for this one, and figure out for yourself how you want to approach this. Your doctor or midwife may have an opinion that will influence your decision as well. I apologize that I can't be more help, but sometimes there just isn't scientific research to answer a perfectly valid question. Sorry!
