Q&A: Is it safe to get a cavity filled while pregnant?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I am six weeks pregnant and have discovered a cavity. Is it safe to get a tooth filled while pregnant? What about the use of novacane and laughing gas?

Let your dentist know you are pregnant before any work has begun. If you have concerns about specific drugs ask your OB since every doctor has their own opinion about drugs. However, it is ok to have a cavity filled while pregnant.

What would be more of a risk is NOT getting your cavity filled, because a tooth abscess would expose you and your pregnancy to much more risky medicines.
