Q&A: What is the best cure for migraines during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

What is the best cure for migraines during pregnancy? They have given me shots of Demoral and Midrin. I don't want anything to harm my baby, but I also can't handle these headaches every day.

The older and newer drugs for migraines have been problemmatic in pregnancy because of potential harm to the baby. The narcotics, although having a risk, albeit small, have been time honored. Midrin is not contraindicated in pregnancy, according to a 1984 study, "The Biochemical Effects of Drugs in Pregnancy."

I would think that if your headaches are so tricky to get rid of, you should ask your OB to refer you to a neurologist for an opinion as to possible combinations of safe, antimigraine drugs.
