Q&A: What foods should I avoid to prevent a listeria infection during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I've heard friends warn me about not eating certain foods while I'm pregnant because I might get listeria. What foods should I avoid to prevent a listeria infection?

The Center for Disease Control has a web site dealing with Listeria. It can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/listeriosis_g.htm.

Foods to avoid are soft cheeses like feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined, and Mexican-style cheese. You'll find much more information about this topic in my article Listeria Infection in Pregnancy.
