Q&A: Is a Pap smear safe in pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Is a Pap smear safe in pregnancy?

Yes, a Pap smear is safe. In fact, it's part of your initial work-up when you see your health care provider after becoming pregnant. A Pap smear is just one of several tests that your health care provider will give you during your first trimester to make sure that both you--and your unborn baby--are healthy.

The Pap is a gentle scraping of cells from the mouth of your womb. This scrapping is no where near where you baby rests tucked instead the uterus. You may notice after your visit, some spotting for a day or two, so don't panic if this happens.

An abnormal Pap smear may lead your health care provider to manage your prenatal care differently, depending on the results.
