Q&A: Should facial creams and moisturizers should be avoided during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

What ingredients in facial creams and moisturizers should be avoided during pregnancy? I read about avoiding Retinol but I just realized my facial creams have either poly hydroxy or alpha hydroxy ingredients, are either of those dangerous?

You're right that anti-aging and acne products containing Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, should be avoided during pregnancy. According to several trusted sources, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consuming (or in the case of facial creams, putting on) too much vitamin A may lead to birth defects in your unborn baby.

The ingredients you describe are most likely moisturizers and should be fine, but when in doubt, talk to your health care provider just to be sure!
