Q&A: What is considered a "safe" level of progesterone?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I recently read that low levels of progesterone can cause or threaten a miscarriage. I've already had two miscarriages and my former doctor told me it was because my progesterone levels were too low. I am now six weeks pregnant and I am taking Premetrium to raise the level of progesterone in my system. What is considered a "safe" level of progesterone and what is considered a "dangerous" level?

There's no real dangerous level, in that the progesterone you're taking is the same as that produced by your pregnancy. The important thing to know is that until there's either a miscarriage or a healthy pregnancy, there's no way of knowing whether a pregnancy is in trouble because the progesterone is too low, or if the progesterone is low because the pregnancy's in trouble. Certainly a good heartbeat on ultrasound is a welcome sign that all is well.
