Q&A: Should I be tested for toxoplasmosis if my cats never go outside?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

My two cats remain strictly indoors. They have no contact with rodents, birds or garbage. Before having these two cats, I had an indoor/outdoor cat for 20 years. Do I still need to be concerned about toxoplasmosis? I go for my first check-up this month. Should I be tested for this infection?

Yes, ask them to check for Toxo antibodies. If you have them, you've been exposed and are immune. If not, then just use handwashing as protection after handling the cats.
