Q&A: Is it safe for me to travel while I'm pregnant?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

My husband and I have just started trying to conceive last month. (We did not get pregnant last month). We would like to go on a long roadtrip/vacation this summer around the 4th of July. If I do become pregnant in the next few months, will it be safe to go on this trip? We live in Michigan and want to drive as far as Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon.

Travelling in pregnancy, if you're not being followed for any complications,
should be safe--especially since you're staying on the ground where you can get to a hospital should any surprises occur.

I would avoid overnight camping that might involve travelling on foot all day before you could get help. Pregnancy is a condition that can develop complications fairly quickly. But if you're always within an hour of an area that has a hospital,
you should be fine.
