Just in time for Doula Appreciation Month, here are some famous mamas who had a doula on hand during childbirth.

Betty Draper and natural childbirth don’t seem to go together, unless of course, you’re talking about January Jones. The Mad Men actress opted for all things natural during her 2011 birth of son Xander, including using a doula. In Jones’s case, she also opted for the help of a postpartum doula, or an assistant whose job is to help the mama stay well in the first few days and weeks after birth. “I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well, with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation,” Jones told People magazine in a headline-grabbing post-birth interview.

Famous morning talk show host Kelly Ripa made sure she had a little backup help during the birth of daughter Lola (her second child) by having a doula with her in the delivery room. “We used a doula with the second pregnancy,” Ripa revealed on Live!. “We did breathing exercises, we focused on things, and we focused on getting [my husband] Mark out of the room!”

Adele Dazeem… er… Idina Menzel, the songstress who made “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen such a hit, let it go and let her doula take the lead when it came to keeping everyone calm during the birth of son, Nathaniel Walker. As proud papa Taye Diggs told Jimmy Kimmel Live!, “the doula basically told us everything that was going to happen before it was going to happen, because regardless of all the books that you read, for me personally, when I’m in the moment, I forget everything.”

Singer Erykah Badu loved having a doula with her so much her during birth that she became one herself! Explaining her inspiration to help other women in birth, Badu told Babble.com, “I had all my children at home, naturally. I had a very wise doula and midwives giving me the freedom to continue living my life. By the time I had my third baby, childbirth seemed a very natural part of life to me.”

Now there’s a wise mama move! Just before the birth of son Ever, Morissette told WebMD Magazine, “I have an amazing midwife, and I’m using a doula. But we have a backup plan: I’ve called all the doctors and we’ll be ready if something should happen.”
