10 Crazy Places Women Have Given Birth
Because some babies just can't wait to make a grand entrance… Check out these strange-but-true places where women have unexpectedly given birth.
At Her Own Wedding
What?! The ultimate wedding crasher! In France, a pregnant bride and her groom said “I do” in a civil wedding ceremony, only to find out she really was due—right that minute. As the bridal party was leaving for the reception, the bride’s water broke and she backtracked into the town hall where she gave birth moments later. The rest of the wedding guests? Not knowing what had happened, they were waiting at the reception hall!

In the Ocean Surrounded by Dolphins
What?! Talk about a walk on the wild side for mom-to-be Heather Barringer. The North Carolina woman plans to give birth in the ocean surrounded by a pod of wild dolphins. Called “dolphin-assisted midwifery,” Barringer and her husband have traveled to Hawaii in order to work with a group that facilitates dolphin-assisted birth. Her back-up plan? Much less exotic—and far more safe—she’ll birth with a midwife who lives on a nearby farm.
At 30,000 Feet
What?! In 2011, pregnant mom Aida Alamillo was on a flight from Manila to San Francisco when she went into preterm labor at 35 weeks. No doctors were on board, but three nurses were on hand to assist in the delivery of her son, Kevin Raymar Francis Domingo—”Francis,” because they were en route to San Francisco. When his first cry was heard, fellow airplane passengers cheered.
What?! In 2010, a Minnesota mom left for the hospital as soon as labor began, stopping to pick up her husband—who was unable to drive due to a medical condition—along the way. En route, her water broke. And then? The baby “just slid out,” her husband later told the local newspaper. “All of a sudden, I heard this little waa-a-a-a.” The mom cradled her newborn between her legs while her husband steered the car into the hospital parking lot.
On the Sidewalk Outside the Hospital
What?! Expecting her first child in 2009, Tiffany Kohls made it to the hospital when she went into labor—but not actually inside. Things happened so quickly for the Eau Claire, Wisconsin mom that she ended up giving birth before she could get inside. Luckily, a nurse and two security guards were on hand to help her welcome son Kellen.
At the Library
What?! In 2009, Dominique Trevino was on a cross-town bus in Denver when she went into labor. After getting off at the next stop for the public library to call an ambulance, Trevino only made it to the building entrance before delivering a baby girl. Library security was on hand to help, but forget scanning the shelves for a book on emergency birth! Trevino only had to push twice before her little bookworm arrived.
In a Tree
What?! In 2000, a sudden flood in her hometown in Mozambique forced Sofia Pedro to climb a tree to escape the rising water. She was out of harm’s way, but still had a big problem: she was in labor. A helicopter rescue crew was able to lower a medic to help her, and the brave mom held onto branches as she delivered her baby, a little girl she named Rosita. Is this “Rock-a-Bye Baby” come to life?
