Q&A: My husband found that episiotomies can cause sexual dysfunction, but we don't know what kind.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

My husband was looking up information on episiotomies, and found that they can cause sexual dysfunction. What kind of dysfunction can they cause?

Any scarring of the perineum, whether it's caused by an episiotomy or by a tear, can lead to difficulty with sexual pain, but this is actually very uncommon. Having an episiotomy or not having one does not offer protection from this complication. However, if problem areas do occur, they can be corrected on an out-patient basis, after the distortion of the pregnancy is over.
