Q&A: My doctor asked me if I wanted her to strip my membranes, but I don't know what that means.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 38 weeks pregnant and went to the doctor today. While doing my internal exam, she asked me if I wanted her to strip my membranes. What does this mean?

Stripping membranes is when the doctor's finger is inserted into the cervix to separate the stuck edge of your water bag from it. This releases chemicals at a molecular level that can be converted into other chemicals, which may in turn initiate labor. It's safe and not unreasonable, but it's meddling. It may help you have your baby by your due date or it may do nothing.
