Q&A: Can I take anything for mouth ulcers while pregnant?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I took something to keep from getting ulcers before I was pregnant, but of course can't take it now. These ulcers are painful and I was wondering if there was anything I could use for the pain? It's so bad that at times I can hardly open my mouth.

We don't have any great treatments for mouth ulcers even when not pregnant. Zovirax in the latter part of pregnancy might help. And that's assuming it's herpes type I. Otherwise, any astringent preparation may help. I would ask an oral surgeon or dentist to make a list of all of the known treatments and then let your obstetrician use line-item veto to tell you which one he or she is uncomfortable with.
