Q&A: Are night sweats normal during pregnancy?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I am 22 weeks pregnant. Ever since I got pregnant I have been waking up at night in a pool of sweat. In fact, this was one of the first things that made me think I might be pregnant in the first place, which is weird because I've never heard of such a thing.

Everyone I talk to, and all the books I've read say that night sweats frequently happen after a birth and during menopause, but I have found no information about nightsweats during pregnancy. I do not sweat much at any other time. Is this normal?

The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can cause an elevation in body temperature, which, in turn can cause you to sweat at night. Remember to drink plenty of water to replace the fluids you are loosing.
