Q&A: How early in pregnancy does breast tenderness go away?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am only 7 weeks (and a few days) along. I went from having major breast tenderness to absolutely none at all. This seems early to me for this to go away--should I be concerned?

Many Thanks

No, because breast tenderness is a really unreliable symptom to judge the health of a pregnancy.

If you're really worried, you can ask for a vaginal ultrasound, which even at 7 weeks can show a fetal heart. Officially, breast non-tenderness isn't a bona fide indication for ultrasound, so your HMO, PPO, or other health insurance may not allow it. If not, you can ask your doctor for a "cash" price for a "quickie," just to give you peace of mind. (Who knows, it just may shame him or her into popping on the ultrasound for a minute for free.)
