I am 30 weeks pregnant, and recently my breasts started leaking. Some days I also have very sharp pains surrounding the nipple. I know that the leaking is normal, but what about the pain?

Milk "let down" can happen spontaneously at any time in later pregnancy. Pain around the nipples is a result of both increased sensitivity and small amounts of microscopic engorgement near the drainage ducts going to the nipple. Also, flow allows bacteria to have a way in, superficially at least, which can increased the sensitivity due to a localized inflammatory site. It's all pretty normal and pretty harmless, but make sure to mention your pain to your health care provider at your next prenatal visit.
