Q&A: How do you tell the difference between spotting and your period?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I was just wondering if you can be pregnant and still get your period? Also, how do you tell the difference between spotting and your period?

Spotting is very light bleeding (it is usually brown) and lasts only one to two days. This is different from a period which lasts four to five days and is heavier in flow. Women may spot during the first trimester but you can not be pregnant and get a period.
