Breaking the News to Your Boss
It’s very important that you and your boss are on the same page when it comes to how your pregnancy may affect your work, your co-workers, and business in general. Chances are it won’t adversely affect anyone. But, it’s a manager’s job to think with the bottom line in mind, so he or she will probably have some concerns or questions.
Some key things to remember when sharing your news include:
- Be the first to tell your boss: If your manager hears about your pregnancy from someone else at the office, he/she will probably not view the news as positively as if you told him/her yourself. Also, if he/she does have concerns, you won’t be there to alleviate them immediately. It’s a good idea to tell your manager before telling others at work.
- Appear organized and optimistic: Work is often about impressions. Your manager will not be as concerned about business as usual if it appears you have considered all sides, your plans are well thought-out, and you are positive about what’s to come.
- Timing is everything: Don’t choose a hectic time to tell your boss or manager that you’re pregnant. Also, it’s a good idea to wait until after your first trimester. By this time your risk of miscarriage is much lower.
- Schedule another time to discuss the details: Wait a few days before you discuss the details of your maternity leave. Make sure it’s a scheduled appointment.
