Q&A: I had a miscarriage and don't know when to expect my next period.
When should I expect my first period after a miscarriage?
This can vary considerably based on a number of factors. A very early miscarriage can be followed by a period within a few days. A later miscarriage, for example one that occurs after 8 or 9 weeks of pregnancy, may take several months. The pregnancy produces the hormone hCG. It takes time for the hCG levels to be eliminated from the body. A period will generally occur by the time the hCG levels have returned to negative.
Removal of a pregnancy by a D&C (dilation and curettage) will often result in the period coming sooner than if the pregnancy were passed on its own.
