I was excited to finally get pregnant after trying for several months (I'm 41). But after 2 sonograms my doctor couldn't find any fetal heartbeat. Also, my uterus size indicated I was 8 weeks along but my embryo's growth was only at 6 weeks. My doctor has recommended that I let "nature take its course" and let my body miscarry on its own. My husband and I are anxious to try to have another baby. How long should I wait before I ask for a D&C (dilation and curettage)?

Certainly a D&C would jump-start your ovulation cycle if want to try to conceive again soon. And since you're 41 it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask your health care provider to set a deadline performing a D&C if you haven't miscarried. After that deadline, a D&C may be appropriate. A few statistics that your doctor might be considering in advising you, the American Pregnancy Association reports that "about 50% of women who miscarry do not undergo a D&C procedure." Instead, their bodies naturally miscarry. Add to that, along with having has a complication rate (although it's very low), a D&C is an uncomfortable procedure, both physically and mentally, for most women. Also, just to let you know, your health care provider will most likely advise that you wait until you've had at least one period before you try to get pregnant again. Waiting ensures that your body is free from any remaining tissue from your miscarriage (which can cause infection) and that your body's hormone levels have returned to normal.
