Q&A: Is pain a sign of miscarriage?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have been trying to get pregnant since January. I concieved in April but miscarried at 6 weeks. My cycles are quite long (33-37 days) so when I am late it seems like I am REALLY late. I am a few days late now, and have pain in my side ... higher than menstral cramps. Is this at all normal? I had it last time too, but long before the miscarriage. Is this a sign I am going to miscarry again?

No. You can have pains that are growing pains. Also, adhesions (internal scarring) can get stretched in pregnancy, giving these types of pain. Nevertheless, you doctor may want to examine you to check for a threatened miscarriage or even ectopic pregnancy, but that is less likely.
