Q&A: How do I know if I had a miscarriage?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

About 3 months ago I had a pregnancy test come up VERY weakly positive at a hospital. It was so weak that it didn't even show up on an EPT home pregnancy test 15 days after my missed period. A few days later I had a period, it was slightly heavier than normal, but otherwise left no reason for concern in my mind. Then, the next month I was about 2 weeks late and had a slightly heavy period. Now, this past month I was only 2 days late and it was still a little heavy. Could I have been pregnant and had a miscarriage? If so, how long should I wait to try to conceive again?

It's possible that you had a miscarriage, but often such reliable information gets lost in the desire to be pregnant so badly that everything gets melodramatized. But...if the pregnancy test was done correctly and it was positive (weak, or not), then you probably were pregnant. A blood test to count the amount of HCG would be a better way to go next time. If you've had 3 spontaneous cycles since, you can try again now. Good luck on this.
