Q&A: I am trying to conceive after a miscarriage, but it feels like it's taking forever.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I had a miscarriage last month and ended up having to have a D&C. I still have not had a cycle and it has been over a month. We have been trying to get pregnant for a year and really want to get pregnant soon. I have taken a test today and it was negative. How long will it take for me to get pregnant again?

Sometimes it takes as long as 3 months for all of the effects of the previous pregnancy to be totally gone. I would wait for three spontaneous cycles before trying again--that's what I recommend for my own patients, but ask your own doctor. Except for the wait of getting back into a normal cycling, it shouldn't take any longer (give or take a few cycles) for you to conceive again, assuming nothing else has changed.
