Q&A: I am now 26-weeks pregnant and have a severe cough that makes it hard to breathe and sleep.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am now 26-weeks pregnant and have a severe cough that makes it hard to breathe and sleep. Sometimes I even throw up because of the violent coughing. What cough medicine can I take for this? I'm miserable.

Ask your doctor about something with dm (Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide) in it. It's sold over the counter. Such conditions can affect sleep, fatigue, your ability to fight infection due to exhaustion, and nutrition. Also, a chonic cough needs evaluation from an Ear-Nose-Throat specialist's standpoint to rule out chest conditions and laryngeal polyps.
