Q&A: How do fibroid uterine tumors affect pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

How do fibroid uterine tumors affect pregnancy? My doctor has suggested that I not exercise until she says it's OK, due to some fibroid tumors. What do you think?

Fibroids, unless they're huge, usually don't affect pregnancy; although they can theoretically act as a foreign body to make preterm labor more likely. They also can cause infertility, but if you're already pregnant, that's moot. Your doctor probably wants to stack the deck in your favor, so you should take her advice.
