Q&A: I have gestational diabetes and fear my baby will be extremely large.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The diabetes is under control, am I still at risk of having an extremely large baby?

Not if you remain under good control, and usually gestational diabetes is easy to control. Large babies from diabetic mothers are a result of excess sugar being dumped into the baby's growth, and generally a baby will use all of the sugar presented to it. Good control reduces this risk substantially by limiting the amount of excess sugar in YOUR system which can be dumped into your baby's system.
