Q&A: I was told I have an irritable uterus, but I do not know what that is.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am having my 4th baby and have recently been in the hospital and now on bed rest as I went into pre-term labour at 31.5 weeks. The doctors say it is an irritable uterus... What is that? And does it mean I will probably not make full term? I do get contractions daily for about an hour or so and they taper off. I am 2 cm dilated and the cervix is about half the length and I am 75% efaced. If you have any advice or info on the irritable uterus I would appreciate your response.

"Irritable uterus" just means that it contracts very easily, and if the contractions become organized enough it could lead into full labor. If you don't dilate any more you should do fine. If you continue to have episodes of labor patterns, you'll probably be back in the hospital for medicines to stop contractions. But the real definition of labor is more dilation of your cervix, so as long as that doesn't change, then things are stable.
