Q&A: I've had two miscarriages and wonder if it's because of chromosomal abnormalities.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Could you tell me what Chromosome 17 is? I have had two miscarriages in the past four months. The last one my doctor did some testing and she found that it was because of chromosomal abnormalities. I already have a son by another man. Could it be something with my current husband? Or just bad luck? My doctor suggested that we get blood tests to answer some questions, but I was hoping that you could fill me in a little more about this defect.

I think the blood tests are a great idea. Chromosome 17 problems are only seen rarely in miscarriages and can be seen in normal births, too. So just zeroing in on this one finding with that one miscarriage won't help you. You need the full evaluation--not because of the Chromosome 17 incident--but because you've had two miscarriages now.
