Q&A: Can aiport security scanners or microwaves hurt my baby?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I have just happily found out that I am about pregnant after missing my first period. All of a sudden I am consumed with anxiety because in the first 2 weeks or so of my pregnancy the following three things happened:

1. I took a roundtrip air flight and walked through electronic security scanners; 2. I had a bad cold; 3. I stood in front of microwave ovens on a number of occasions.

I feel very nervous about any harm that any of these might do to a brand new fetus. Do you know if these could be harmful?

I don't think these things are harmful. Pregnant women travel, cook and get sick all the time. If you are concerned talk to your OB about his/her recommendations. I hope this helped.
