Q&A: Should I have an amnio because of a cyst found on the baby?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am beginning my 26th week and doctors found a cyst about 5cm in the baby. They are assuming it is in the kidney or ovary, it's a girl.

They recommend an amnio be done ASAP? Should I agree? Is this procedure safe for the baby? What is your recommendation?

I would get a consultation with a maternal-fetal specialist--your OB could make that referral, and the consultant can tell you what the risks are to your baby from the cyst. The risks of an amniocentesis at 26 weeks are infection (rare) and preterm labor (which your OB can certainly be watchful for).
