Q&A: I want to know what my baby's heart rate should be at nine weeks.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I'm nine weeks, five days pregnant and just had my first ultrasound. The baby's heart rate was 115 and 120 (the tech measured it twice). Is that too low of a heart rate? I'm on 100mg of progesterone twice a day due to low progesterone.

In my practice as an obstetrician, I like to see anything greater than 110, so you're probably fine. Progesterone can be sedating to you, but it hasn't been proven to be sedative to the baby. I would tend to think that progesterone has nothing to do with your baby's heart rate, especially since it's adjusted such that you get just enough for your pregnancy.

It sounds like your health care provider is already following your pregnancy carefully—good prenatal care will go a long way toward a health pregnancy and delivery.
