Q&A: I am looking for a new OB.
I am 12 weeks pregnant with a rather difficult pregnancy. I have a history of miscarriage, bicornuate uterus, hyperthyroid, the works. I have finally found a wonderful doctor and hospital, but now I've discovered that we have to move out of state! I don't know much about the area we're moving to, so I have no idea where to start finding a new doctor that I will like and avoid too much of a delay between visits (because of my concerns). How would you suggest going about this?
The two things I would suggest are firstly, to ask your present OB if he knows of an OB or even a hospital that he or she could recommend in your new area. If your doctor cannot help you, research the hospitals in the new area and find one that is nearest the area where you will be living that has the features you are looking for in a hospital, such as a level III NICU if the baby should need one. Once you find the hospital, call the maternity floor and speak with one of the nurses. Ask for their recommendation on a good OB. Tell them your history and that you are new to the area.
In my experience, the MDs that have impressed the nursing staff have also been loved by their patients.
