Q&A: I am concerned about multiple ultrasounds having an effect it might have on my baby.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and have already had 7 or 8 ultrasounds. Are there any risks to my baby from so many ultrasounds?

You don't mention why your health care provider has requested so many ultrasounds—because it is unusual for you to have had so many so soon.

I will say that personally I don't think there's any risk to multiple ultrasounds, especially if they're needed to follow suspected complications. Traditionally, the ultrasound has been blamed for everything from birth defects to Attention Deficit Disorder. But to date, no studies have ever been able to make a connection.

I think that a doctor who watches your pregnancy with additional ultrasound is a doctor who is watching your pregnancy all the closer. That's probably a good thing.
