Q&A: During my third trimester I wonder if traveling by car is safe.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Is it safe to travel via car during your third trimester? I've had a few minor complications to date (cysts, contractions, but not enough to require strict bed rest or medication.)

You didn't mention your exact week of pregnancy but the risk of going into labor on the road increases with each week of pregnancy. If you choose to travel now, you should map out the closest hospitals throughout your road trip. Keep in mind that there is no way to predict the duration of your labor and you could end up delivering on the road. And, if you make it to a hospital, you will not have your normal care provider delivering your baby. While considering the pros and cons of taking the trip, be sure to visit your care provider to discuss the progress of your pregnancy and the risk of traveling at this stage.
