Q&A: I'm 18 weeks. When should my baby be head down?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I'm 18 weeks pregnant. What's the correct position for my baby to be in? If my baby's head is pointing up, should it flip downwards? Will the baby do this naturally, and if so when?

It is common for your baby's position to change often at this point in your pregnancy. He or she will flip upwards and downwards many times during the course of the day. But as your baby gets bigger, there will be less room for such acrobatics. At 32 weeks, babies generally "lock in" to their permanent position, and this is usually head down. But, until then your baby's position doesn't matter—and it it will indeed change often.
