Q&A: Is a decrease in cervical mucus a sign of a problem?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 15 weeks pregnant and have noticed that the thick creamy cervical mucus that was so abundant since my pregnancy began has now disappeared for the past week. I have read that it is supposed to get heavier as the pregnancy progresses. Is this an indication of a problem? Also, I have also notice that I have a tingling feeling in my bladder occasionally. I have been checked for a UTI and do not have one. The third concern I have is that my breasts do not seem to be getting very much bigger - possibly only a half cup increase. I had a m/c at 6 weeks a year ago and have read in a second pregnancy breasts may not increase very much. I have had an u/s at 12 weeks and everything looked good. I am worried about my cervix being incompetent because I know two people who lost their babies this way. Please help!!

The cervical mucus is variable, so I wouldn't see this as a warning of any kind. The tingling in your bladder is either your baby irritating the bladder with fetal movement that radiates toward the bladder wall, or bladder spasm that is common. The breasts are not a concern...wait and they will rise to the occasion. Cervical incompetence is a risk if you've had loss of pregnancy at or around 20 weeks, not 6 weeks. Hope this helps.
