Q&A: Bipolar medication safe during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have Bipolar Disorder and I am 15 weeks pregnant. I went off my chronic medication (Lamictin) as soon as I heard I was pregnant. Is it safe to go back onto Lamictin at any time during my pregnancy? And also, will I be able to breastfeed while I am on Lamictin?

Do you mean Lamictal? If so, it is category C, which means if you're taking it for seizures, you should follow your doctor's advice. If you're taking it for bipolar symptoms, you and your doctor should determine whether to continue based on benefits outweighing risks.
