Q&A: I want to know if my baby is digesting blood or if it has Down syndrome.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 15 weeks pregnant with my fourth child. The first pregnancy was a miscarriage in the early first trimester. The next two pregnacies were healthy.

This pregnancy, I have had a four-inch blood clot below the placenta that causes me to spot and get monthly ultrasounds. On my last ultrasound, a few days ago, I was told that the baby's bowels were showing bright white, the same that bones show on ultrasounds. I was told that the baby could have Down syndrome or could be digesting some of this blood I am losing. Next week I am going to get the results of my Quad Screen and get a possible amnio.

How likely is it that the baby could just be digesting blood through the bowels, as oppossed to Down syndrome?

This is certaily a confusing set of findings. I think that the amnio is going to be your final answer, though. The blood clot sounds like subchorionic bleeding, which usually resolves spontaneously, which is why they're watching it monthly; hopefully they'll watch it get smaller and smaller and then go away. If the bowel findings clear at the same time the bleeding goes away, I think that would be a pretty good indicator that they were right about the baby ingesting the blood, and this would be a favorable outcome.

Please let me know what happens. This bowel phenomenon is a problem I've never encountered before, either in practice or with BabyZone questions.
