Q&A: Can I take anything for foliculitis during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I had a bad case of foliculitus last summer and now it is back. All over my back, chest, shoulders and upper arms. I'm 15 weeks pregnant and the thought of having to live with this until the baby is born makes me cry. I itch all the time and I don't even want my husband to see me naked. I know I can't take tetracycline which is what my dermatoligist gave me last time but is there anything else I can do or take to clear this up?

The progesterone in the pregnancy is ganging up on you to make this happen. Another trip to your dermatologist is in order. He or she will call your OB, and locate an antibiotic or antibiotic cream they can both agree on. Perhaps they'll try a more natural apprach with oatmeal soaks, etc. There are a lot of antibiotics that are safe to use in pregnancy.
