Q&A: Will my nausea and vomiting ever go away?

I'm in my 14th week of pregnancy and am still nauseated. I've been throwing up consistently, yet mostly it's just in the mornings now. Is this going to go away for certain? I read that some women are sick throughout their entire pregnancy.

Also, I take my prenatal pill before I go to bed. When I throw up in the morning, it's just bile. Is there a chance that I'm expelling essential parts of the vitamin?

How miserable! And so frustrating when you are counting on "morning sickness" to resolve after the first trimester, and then it doesn't.

First off, from the wording of your question it sounds like the vomiting was all day and now is "just" in the mornings. Many moms-to-be find that NVP (nausea and vomiting of pregnancy) starts to get better in funny ways. Maybe it is better for six hours and then returns full force. Then maybe a whole day is good before it starts up again. And some, like you perhaps, find parts of the day get better first. So I am hoping that things are going in the right direction. By now you probably have figured out what works best for you—whether it is eating some crackers before getting out of bed, avoiding mixing liquids and solids, or nibbling all day. And you probably have talked to your doctor or midwife about the pros and cons of medications for nausea. But judging from your report that the time of day of NVP is getting shorter, I think you will not be one of the unfortunate few who vomit for the whole nine months.

As for the vitamins, once you have kept them down about 20 minutes, you have probably gotten what you need from them, unless you actually see the pill come back up. You are smart to take your vitamin at night since you know you are less likely to throw up then. That gives it the best chance of staying down long enough to do you and your baby some good.

NVP is really difficult, and it can be hard to be optimistic while you are feeling physically awful much of the day. Try to keep your eyes on the prize—at the end of this you will have a new member of your family. And maybe, just maybe, when she is pregnant herself, she'll toss you a "thanks" for what you put up with to bring her into the world!
