Q&A: Can I take Ambien or Xanax during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am now almost five months pregnant. Before I became pregnant I was prescribed Ambein for insomnia and Xanax for anxiety. Since the day I found out I was pregnant I haven't taken anything. I have noticed in the past month I haven't slep AT ALL. My husband is worried about me because of my lack of sleep I am shaky and have no energy. I was told I could take a Xanax to help. But not on a regular basis and not after seven months of pregnancy. I wanted to see if you agree with this. Thank you so much for your help!! Lisa

I myself don't ever prescribe Xanax in pregnancy, since it's related to the diazepams, like Valium. Ambien, although not particularly frightful, is a newer drug and doesn't have the years of experience earned yet. I would seek other natural means of establishing a healthy sleep pattern.
