Q&A: How bad it is to sleep on your back during pregnancy?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

My name is Valerie and I was wondering how "bad" is it to sleep on my back. I do have some elevation, so I'm not lying flat on my back. I am a fetal positon sleeper but with this pregnancy (my third) I can't seem to sleep on my side. Help.

As your uterus gets larger during pregnancy, lying on your back places the uterus over important blood vessels (inferior vena cava and aorta). This causes decreased blood flow to your baby and parts of your body. Lying on your left side provides the best circulation for you and your baby. Maybe if you place a pillow behind you you will not be tempted to roll onto your back while asleep. If you do have elevation at the very least I would recommend a cushion under the left side of your lower back just to make sure the uterus is not compressing where it shouldn't be. I hope this helps.
