"Lullaby" by The Dixie Chicks
“Lullaby” is such a sweet song. Dedicated to their children, the ballad has lots of beautiful lines, including this one: “Never knew the best was yet to come.” Soothing words as you anticipate baby’s arrival.

"This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush
“This Woman’s Work,” by Kate Bush, was written for the movie, “She’s Having a Baby,” (one of my favorite 80s films, by the way). I loooove this song, and I think the lyrics capture the labor process in the most beautiful way. Peaceful and empowering at the same time.

"Run the World (Girls)" by Beyonce
“Run the World (Girls)” comes in handy when you’re in need of a pick-me-up. Having a baby can (sometimes) be a long process to endure, so I needed songs like these to keep me feeling motivated and remind myself that, um, what my body was capable of was pretty awesome.

"Dream" by Priscilla Ahn
“Dream” will bring me to tears on an average day, but during the labor process, I found it to be so sweet and soothing. It’s one of those “big picture” songs that answers every question you might have when you realize that on this day, you’re becoming someone’s mother. And it’s a pretty wonderful realization.

"Gotta Have You" by The Weepies
“Gotta Have You” by The Weepies is one of those songs I came across randomly but quickly became a favorite. And the title is self-explanatory, considering the situation (insert smiley face here).

"By Your Side" by Sade
“By Your Side” is a shout out anthem to your partner, the one whose hand you’re squeezing or ordering to bring you another pillow. Ha!

"Fighter" by Christina Aguilera
When you’re feeling tired and near the end (and could really use a pick-me-up). ‘Nuff said.

"Baby, Now That I've Found You" by Alison Krauss
My southern roots are showing: I’m a huge Alison Krauss fan, and this song is one of my absolute favorites. A peaceful song to get you through the tougher moments.

"Is This Love" by Bob Marley
Love this song so much, it almost took me away from the labor to a beach somewhere with a daiquiri in my hand. Almost. I give him props for trying, though. Doesn’t get much more classic than this reggae tune.

"Glitter in the Air" by Pink
Sure, everyone knows Pink for her fast-paced and fun dance songs, but I love her ballads just as much. “Glitter in the Air” is no exception, and it was a great choice to round out my “ultimate playlist.”
