Q&A: Is Brethine harmful to my unborn child?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 34 weeks pregnant, at 26 weeks and 33 weeks I went into pre-term labor. I have been on brethine since 26 weeks. Is there harm to my unborn child?

No, although sometimes babies that are brought to term on Brethine can be bigger than they would have been otherwise. This seems to have no effect, but the opposite--having a preterm baby, can have disastrous effects. So if your doctor's evaluation warranted the use of Brethine, you have little to lose and everything to gain.
