Q&A: Should I be concerned if my amniotic fluid is high?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 35 weeks. My Dr. did an ultrasound to check the amnio fluid. She said my stomach was harder than normal. The result was my fluid was a little on the high side. She told me not to worry about it when I asked her. Why would she be concerned if it my stomach was harder than normal. And what would be the reason for the amnio fluid to be high.

The amniotic fluid is recycled from hour to hour, meaning there are fluctuations in the amount from time to time. If your "stomach" was harder, either she felt you were distended from a little more fluid than usual or possibly even having a contraction. Repeat ultrasound can eliminate any disturbing trends. By this time you are close to term, so any problem would have become more obvious by this time.
