Q&A: I lost my mucus plug at 36 weeks and have some contractions.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

On Monday I had my first internal exam I was 1 centemeter dilated and I am 36 weeks pregnant. The next day I lost my mucus plug and have been having random contractions. Is this a sign that true labor will come soon, and if so how long could it take?

The mucus plug was just loosened with the exam. 1 cm isn't unusual at 36 weeks, and the "digital" irritation more than likely provoked the contractions. But "random contractions" does not labor make! There are many other factors that cause it to develop, so this will probably fade until, of course, your next internal exam.
