Q&A: What is causing abdominal pain at 33 weeks?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 33 weeks pregnant and experience lower abdominal cramps a lot. It happens especially when I have to go to the bathroom (I get them right before and after) or when I'm lying down and change positions. Sometimes, it hurts when I'm doing nothing. I just feel very crampy, very low. At my last ultrasound, the tech said that the baby's head is way down there. So I worry that when I bend over or twist/turn that maybe the pains are being caused because I'm squishing the baby's head!

No, your baby's head is safe. What's probably happening is a little bladder spasm due to crowding of the same space--harmless. Let your doctor know so he or she can rule out contractions, rule out a bladder infection--and if all is negative, you can blow it off with a good conscience.
