Special Considerations
Adoption
A baby shower is a wonderful way to help new parents welcome an adopted child into the family. Before the shower, talk with the mom about what items she needs for the child. Because there can be uncertainty with adoption, do not host too early and be sure the parents will be welcoming the new child into their home.
Showers for the Second, Third ... or 10th Baby
It's wonderful to hold showers for second and third babies—they deserve special recognition too! Parents may appreciate some new clothes for baby, particularly if they are having a different gender child from their other(s). Gifts of time are also very welcome! Moms of newborns will certainly appreciate a gift of babysitting, your assistance with household chores, or some yummy home-cooked meals brought to her house.
It's also a nice idea to give something to the parents for themselves—maybe a gift certificate for dinner at a restaurant or tickets to a movie (with babysitting provided, of course), or items mom can use to pamper herself (body lotion, pretty soaps, candles, or maybe even a good book of short stories).
Single Moms
Remember that single moms will need extra support. Again, gifts of your time and energy (anything to give the new mom a much-needed break!) will be appreciated.
Gifts and Registries
If the mom-to-be intends on registering, she should do so about a month before the shower. This allows the host to send the registration information along with the invitations.
