Surprise! Mom Delivers Quadruplets When Expecting Triplets
There's little to be surprised about in the delivery room these days, unless you deliver an extra baby.
While every pregnancy and birth is different, there aren’t a whole lot of surprises on delivery day anymore. Many of us choose to find out baby’s sex during an ultrasound rather than after we give birth. It’s kind of funny to me that my parents had no clue if I was going to be a girl or boy, yet I knew with quite a bit of certainty what I was having both times.
Even though I secretly wanted twins, I pretty much laughed it off when my dad joked about the possibility of “an extra baby” hiding behind the other during ultrasounds. Thanks to gestational diabetes, I had a lot of ultrasounds. There wasn’t going to be any surprises. There was no way a baby could be hiding in there! Except, that just happened to a Mississippi woman who gave birth to identical quadruplets.
According to The Clarion-Ledger, Kimberly Fugate wasn’t planning on having anymore babies before finding out she was pregnant. Then an ultrasound appointment last November showed she was carrying triplets. As if that wasn’t surprise enough, after delivering three babies her doctor said, “More feet,” and delivered a fourth. Fugate unexpectedly became a new mom of identical quadruplets. One of those babies stayed hidden!
If my doctor would have said he saw more feet, I wouldn’t have believed it. I probably would have laughed and cried at the same time. There’s no time to process or prepare (mentally or materialistically) for that!
Since the babies were delivered at 28 weeks gestation, they must remain in the NICU for awhile which gives the family time to prepare to bring all four babies home. Fugate seems to be handling things well. The Clarion-Ledger reported, “Though nothing about Fugate’s pregnancy was planned, she considers it ‘a blessing’ and is relieved the quadruplets are here and healthy.”
Honestly, I probably would have panicked a bit after spending months preparing and not having an accurate head count in the womb. I mean, it’s a pretty big shock to discover an additional baby in the delivery room. After the initial shock wore off, I would have been in awe while figuring out the logistics of being a new mom to multiples. Thankfully, Fugate’s babies are healthy and she has family and friends willing to help out.
